"The Finishing School," comic opera in one act

  • Keiter Center for Performing Arts Natick, MA (map)

Walnut Hill School for the Arts Voice Program presents "The Finishing School" a comic opera in one act. Music by Franz von Suppe, New Adaptation by Martha Collins. DIRECTED BY TERESA WINNER BLUME

The scene is set in the late 1890s in a woman’s preparatory “finishing” school, loosely inspired by our very own Walnut Hill. This particular evening, all the young students are restless, and feeling especially romantic, dramatic and lovesick. The stoic and morally superior headmistress Miss Regina and her fellow teachers demand the girls set aside their silliness and focus on their studies. As the girls continue to entertain themselves in their dramatic pursuits, Helen dreams of being engaged to her beau, Charles. Sadly, her father has forbidden it unless Charles can gain secure employment within 48 hours. Charles comes to visit in secret, and a plan is hatched to change the fate of their lives together. The plan, of course, depends on perfectly timed comedic hijinx and deceptions in the garden at night, as one might expect in an opera. Everyone finds themselves in some sort of compromising scenario until, at last, they come together in a wonderfully happy end!

One Act. 65 minutes. No intermission.
